It may not be harder, but Delta says it’s about to launch wifi that’s better, faster and stronger than others. And in place of “harder”, it’ll be free.

Game on, other airlines.

Delta was among the very first to promise a day when wifi would actually be worth logging onto, and also among the first to say that one day it would be free. Now those airline claims are due to come good on February 1st. So, what should we expect?

Delta Launches Free Wifi For “Everyone”

Everyone who creates a free Delta SkyMiles account will be able to enjoy free in-flight wifi on *almost* all Delta flights, come February 1st, 2023. You’ll be able to create an account on board, or on the ground.

The *almost all flights* is due to challenges with some smaller regional aircraft and some long haul routes. Passengers can expect free wifi on most mainline Delta flights, with at least 80% of the fleet ready to go from the start of Feb.

International and small regional flights will be outfitted by 2024. As a reminder, it’s no longer 2022, so the timeline isn’t as far away as it initially sounds!

“We didn’t just want free Wi-Fi to offer base-level service – we wanted it to be transformative for the entire onboard experience. It is imperative all customers onboard can enjoy their favorite content just as they would at home, and we’ve put this system through meticulous tests to make that possible.”

Ed Bastian, CEO of Delta Airlines

Delta is working with in-flight wifi provider Viasat to offer the service on all flights by 2024. GSTP has consistently been wowed by Viasat on flights which have offered the service.

Other Airlines To Join Soon?

When Delta announced free-wifi, others made similar claims. American Airlines and United are expected to join, among others. If there’s one thing the “big three” are good at, it’s nipping each others big moves. See also: change fees.

If you’re one who doesn’t miss the old days of disconnecting in the sky, this is truly incredible news. As airlines compete to win customers and free wifi becomes part of the expected experience, possibilities become endless. Let’s see who comes next.

For now, Delta is launching free wifi for “all” customers come February 1st, and if you still have questions about it, the airline has launched a brilliant FAQ about all the details.
